The Nautical Institute has made amendments to the Dynamic Positioning Operator Certification Scheme in their January 2012 revision. As of 1 January 2012 the entry qualifications into the scheme have been tightened to now only available to deck officers holding STCW II/1, II/2, II/3 certificates and engineers holding STCW III/1, III/2, III/3 certificates.

Cadets, trainees and other prospective DPOs in the process of gaining one of the above mentioned certificates can commence the DPO training scheme by completing the DP Induction (Basic) course and have 30 days familiarisation seatime recognised. The Simulator (Advanced) course and remaining seatime can only be gained once a STCW certificate is held.
