The Stage 2 Offshore Crane Operator course aims to give participants the knowledge required to operate an offshore crane in a safe and efficient manner. This is achieved using a bank of scenarios on the offshore crane simulator and by demonstration from experienced offshore crane operators.


The Stage 2 Offshore Crane Operator course is aimed at participants who have completed the Stage 1 training or have verifiable experience operating cranes.

Course Pre-requisites

  • Stage 1 Offshore Crane Operator Certificate of Competency.
  • Minimum of 1 year crane operating experience.
  • The participant is able to supply to the assessor a detailed CV (resume) and contactable references to verify experience.

Course Content

  • Crane pre operational checks and maintenance.
  • Wire rope inspection and care.
  • Safe rigging practices.
  • Rigging calculations.
  • Offshore crane safety devices.
  • Safe working loads.
  • Load indicators.
  • Dynamic factors.

Career Opportunities/Pathways

Successful completion of this course will allow participants to perform unsupervised deck lifts on offshore facilities. Further practical experience may lead to attaining the pre-requisites for Offshore Crane Operator - Stage 3.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy Requirements

This assessment requires the ability to read and interpret typical product specifications, job sheets, procedures, material labels and safety information as provided to operators. Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms. Numeracy is required to calculate loads and estimate balance points for slinging. All assessment activities will be conducted in English.

Practical Assessment

The participant will be required to perform a range of exercises in varying weather conditions in the offshore crane simulator.

Theory Assessment

Crane operators will be required to successfully complete a theory assessment before being deemed competent.


Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded a Stage 2 Certificate of Competency allowing them to perform deck lifts unsupervised.

5 days

  • Day 1 - 8:30am to 4:30pm
  • Day 2 - 8:30am to 4:30pm
  • Day 3 - 8:30am to 4:30pm
  • Day 4 - 8:30am to 4:30pm
  • Day 5 - 8:30am to 3:30pm
