Objective

The course aims to prepare aspiring offshore crane operators by developing the necessary skills and knowledge as contained in the PMASS00023 - Offshore Crane Driver Skill Set. Participants will learn the fundamentals of safe offshore crane operation and will practice and develop their skills in the offshore crane simulator while under guidance from experienced offshore operators.

Participants

The course is designed for participants with little or no offshore crane operating experience, either currently working in an offshore lifting team or wishing to enter the industry with the basic skills and knowledge required to performconfidently and safely. Participants shall be sponsored, where the sponsor agrees to provide safe access to, and use of, an offshore-rated crane.

Content

The three units of competency addressed in PMASS00023 - Offshore Crane Driver Skill Set include:

MSMSUP205 Transfer Loads.

PMASUP237 Undertake crane, dogging and load transfer operations.

PMASUP305 Operate offshore cranes.

A nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the Skill Set will be issued upon successful completion of the course and all assessment activities.

Career Opportunities/Pathways

This Skill Set may lead to employment in the offshore oil and gas industry.

On completion students may undertake further studies toward the completion of the PMA20116 Certificate II in Process Plant Operations, PMA30116 Certificate III in Process Plant Operations or PMA40116 Certificate IV in Process Plant Technology. Farstad Shipping Offshore Simulation Centre staff are available to discuss further training options with course participants.

Course Pre-requisites

Participants must be a minimum of 18 years of age to attend this course.

Please be advised some worksites require offshore crane operators to hold a valid (Tower Crane) High Risk Licence prior to being eligible to operate offshore cranes. Interested participants are advised to contact their employer or prospective employer/s for advice.

Additionally, Farstad Shipping Offshore Simulation Centre staff are available to discuss course applicability prior to enrolment.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy Requirements

This unit requires the ability to read and interpret typical product specifications, job sheets, procedures, material labels and safety information as provided to operators. Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms. Numeracy is required to calculate loads and estimate balance points for slinging.

You may be required to undertake a LL&N test.

Assessment & Competency Achievement

Assessments during the 5 day course include written tests, projects and practical simulator observations.

A nationally recognized Statement of Attainment for the PMASS00023 Offshore Crane Driver Skill Set will be issued upon completion of the course and all assessment activities.

  • Day 2 8:30am to 4:30pm
