Objectives

The course aims to give participants the required knowledge and skills to safely conduct testing and interpret readings using a personal gas monitor. Participants will be required to carry out gas testing to determine if it is safe to enter a specific area or workspace.

Participants

The course is designed for participants who are required to perform gas testing duties in their workplace.
Participants will gain the required knowledge and skills to use electronic gas testing apparatus to determine if an area is safe for proposed work.

  • Why monitor atmospheres?
  • Different types of gas test equipment.
  • Target gases and gas behaviour.
  • Prepare and plan for monitoring.
  • Operate gas test equipment.
  • Take precautions to safe guard health.
  • Take atmospheric readings.
  • Maintain equipment.

Assessment & Competency Achievement

Course assessments include written tests, projects and practical observations.
All participants will be assessed on performance and understanding using assessment tools aligned to the unit of competency MSMWHS217.


On successful completion of this course, participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in MSMWHS217 - Gas Test Atmospheres.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy Requirements

  • This unit requires the ability to read and interpret a meter and then communicate the conclusions.
  • Writing is required to the level of completing required workplace reports/forms.
  • Numeracy is required to read the instrument and interpret the results as being safe/not safe and so
    determine the required actions.
