Objectives

One of the most high risk tasks performed both offshore and onshore is entry into confined spaces. The course aims to give participants the opportunity to practice entering confined spaces in a simulated work environment while giving them the required knowledge to recognise risk and apply preventative measures associated with confined space entry.

Participants

The course is targeted at personnel who are required to enter confined spaces as part of their work duties. The course is aimed at a variety of industries including oil and gas, mining, construction, manufacturing.

Content

The course has been designed to align with and meet the principals set by the industry skills council in relation to the unit of competency MSMPER205 - Enter Confined Space and MSMPER200 - Work in accordance with an issued permit.

In particular the course provides participants the following:

  • Ability to recognise a confined space
  • Ability to work within a confined space
  • Compliance with permit conditions
  • Recognition and control of atmospheric hazards
  • Use of confined space entry and exit equipment relevant to the site / job
  • Selection, use and maintenance of appropriate PPE
  • Use of communication equipment and processes applicable to confined space work
  • Completion of documents and records relevant to confined space work
  • Understanding of and the ability to initiate incident / emergency response plan

On completion of this unit students may wish to undertake further studies towards a qualification. Farstad Shipping Offshore Simulation Centre training staff are available to discuss further training options with course participants.

Course Pre-requisites

MSMPER200 - Work in accordance with an issued permit (delivered as part of the course on day 1)

Assessment & Competency Achievement

Course assessments include written tests, projects and practical observations.
All participants will be assessed on performance and understanding using assessment tools aligned to the unit of competency MSMPER205 - Enter confined space.

On successful completion of the course, participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in MSMPER205 - Enter confined space and MSMPER200 - Work in accordance with an issued permit.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy Requirements

This unit requires the ability to:

  • read and correctly interpret required documentation relevant to the entry
  • speak clearly and unambiguously in English
  • explain, describe and verify sometimes complex needs and issues
  • understand the permit requirements.

Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms and producing any required reports.Numeracy is required to the level of being able to correctly differentiate between high and low pressures and temperatures, voltages or masses and interpret gas test/monitoring results.

1.5 Days

  • Day 1 - 8:30am to 4:30pm
  • Day 2 - 8:30am to 12:00pm
