To update the participant’s knowledge of the principles of Dynamic Positioning (DP), DP operations, DP watch keeping “best practice” and DP emergencies taking into account recent developments and current Industry requirements/guidelines.

Participants will be required to prove through practical exercises that they are able to plan and execute DP operations. This will include risk assessment, contingency planning, toolbox talk and the assessment of vessel capability.

During simulated bridge watchkeeping, participants will be required carry out DP watch keeping practices. This includes execution of the Operational plan, completion of appropriate DP checklists and watch hand over. During this process they will be required to recognise and respond correctly to a variety of alarms, warnings and information messages which could lead to catastrophic failure.


For participants who hold a Nautical Institute DP certificate and who have been operating in DP for 3-5 years without refresher training.

Course Pre-requisites

Participants will hold a Nautical Institute DP certificate and have been operating in DP for 3-5 years without refresher training.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy Requirements

This unit requires the ability to read and interpret typical product specifications, job sheets, procedures, and safety information as provided to operators. Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms, log and reports. The course is delivered in English.

Assessment & Competency Achievement

There is no formal assessment carried out at the completion of the course. 100% attendance and participation in the course is required. Participants will be awarded a Certificate of Training on completion of the course.

Course Duration

3 days

  • Day 1 - 8:30am to 4:30pm
  • Day 2 - 8:30am to 4:30pm
  • Day 3 - 8:30am to 3:00pm
